Often people ask me, “why book a Fresh48 session when we are doing to do a newborn session a week later?”  This is a great question and one that I LOVE having the opportunity to answer!

If you’ve had a baby there are a few things you likely know. The few short days following birth are an absolute blur. You’re learning all about the precious new life you created. Their wrinkles and dimples and birthmarks and the way they suck on their chubby little fingers. The position they like to eat in, the grunts they make that can only mean a dirty diaper and how snuggled up on daddy’s chest is already a favorite place to be. That new little life changes so much in the first few days and will never again look as fresh and new.

You may also remember how tiring those days in the hospital are. Nurses and doctors checking in, lactation consultants offering support and visitors excited to meet your bundle!  At times the only thing you want to do is sleep.

You packed your camera for the hospital with the best of intentions to document all of those first couple days so you never forget, but the camera never leaves the bag.  You took photos with your cell phone but wish you had more. I know. I’ve been there. And goodness do I wish I had hired someone to come in for an hour to capture this fleeting time.

This scenario is the heartbeat of why Fresh48 sessions are my absolute favorite! I have the opportunity to freeze in time the moments that I wish I had captured of my own.  Those first stretches and wiggles and wrinkles that change so quickly.  I get to document the time when big sister meets little brother for the first time so that you can be present, soaking in this precious moment you’ve imagined for 9 months.  It is the greatest honor and jOy to be a part of this special time in the lives of many families!

Here is a little taste of what I like to capture during a Fresh48 session. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome, Baby E to the world!

This sweet girl right here. Joy.  The beautiful face behind Simply Bloom and the adorable South African accent!  We met virtually about 9 months ago after I purchased some of her We ROAR Project cards and realized she was local!  I was instantly inspired by her and that just continues to grow!  We finally met in person last month when I visited her beautiful studio where the magic takes place! She is an insanely talented speaker, writer, designer, and encourager.  Kind of a creative genius that believes in encouraging women to embrace their stories and live out their passions with purpose!!  And kind as can be.  The type of person who truly listens to every word you have to say and genuinely cares.  The kind of person that makes this world a more jOyful place to be!  Her parents definitely named her appropriately! 😉

This spring Joy launched her second book, Penduka. It’s an invitation to wake up your soul. To live, wholeheartedly, the life you were created for! I often say that my life is perfectly-imperfect, messy and beautiful! This book is a call to EMBRACE it and to live intentionally. If you are someone like me that feels like you have all of these passions but sometimes feel lost on what to do with them to actually make a difference, this book may be just for you! You will feel like you’re sitting face to face with Joy while you read along and realize that you aren’t alone in this journey! And I hope that you realize you are brave and the world needs YOU and that special something that only you have to offer!!

I’m excited to share with you some glimpses into Joy’s beautiful space where she creates! It was a blessing to spend time there with this sweet, funny, tea-drinking gal from South Africa with one of the most genuine hearts I’ve encountered!

I.can’t.even. This little man is so studly I decided he needed his own blog post.  I met him 9 months ago as a newborn, just a month after we moved back to Michigan from Florida.  I was so grateful to meet his parents and to have someone take a leap of faith with “the new girl in town!” I can’t believe he is already sitting up and crawling all over the place! In just 3 short months we will meet again for his 1 year photos. Time.must.slow.down. Enjoy one of my favorite photos from his Milestone Session.

2 years ago I embarked on a journey of capturing the everyday moments in our home and have decided to begin this journey again after a year off.  On the 10th of each month I will take 10 photos throughout the day, no matter how mundane the day’s events may seem.  (thus the name, 10 on 10!) I hope this pushes me to photograph my own family more often and to find joy in those everyday moments of raising 2 toddlers!

Yesterday was a freezing, snowy day so we spent most of the day inside. C & J snuck outside to play but that only lasted 10 minutes before they were knocking on the door asking for hot cocoa! H spent those few minutes of alone time having a little dance party and photographing the boys from indoors! Love that my girl would rather stay warm inside with her momma!

2016 is the year that I will take more photos of my own children. I love photographing the beautiful babies and children that belong to others, but I realized I was neglecting capturing memories of my own family. And although I love living in the moment and not worrying about always having a camera in hand, I want to have these photos to look back on when my babies are grown up. So here are a few I captured this week while H & C played quietly at their new Lego table.  This is just a little practice for the 10 on 10 project I will begin this week! Stay tuned…
